If you haven't heard, a website called
www.spokeo.com is now online and sharing private information about people without their consent.... your address... a map to your home with satellite imagery... your income.. your credit rating (low, medium, high, etc).. your family members, even your politics. Apparently they are mining info from " phone books, social networks, marketing surveys, real estate listings, business websites, and other public sources" In any event, I urge you to go to the site and do a search for yourself and put in a request to have your info removed. In my case I found three instances of my name and had to request removal of each of them separately. Here's how:
1. Go to
www.spokeo.com and search by your name
2. When the results come back narrow it down by clicking your name and state, then click your name and region
3. Once you narrow it down to your region you will see a column on the left with your name and street address (with other listings). Click your name. Once you click it your "profile" will show up on the right.
4. While on this page, select the URL and right mouse click and select COPY
5. Now go to this website address:
http://www.spokeo.com/privacy6, Right mouse click on the URL box and select PASTE to paste the URL in you copied from step #4
7. Enter an email address you can access but not your main email address. You might want to create an email account on Yahoo for this step BEFORE you put in the request. The point is that you don't want to give these people your actual email address. So either go create one on GMAIL or Yahoo for this, or use one that you don't care about
8. Enter "code" based on the image they show.
9. Submit the request
10. Go check the email you entered. There will be a verification email from them. Copy the URL they send, paste it in your browser, and finally the operation is complete and they will remove you within 24 hours
This is not a prank, spam, or myth. Send this email to everyone you know
